Approach to EAP Course Design for Different Subject Specialisms

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

According to Clayton et, al. (2010), English for Academic Purpose (EAP) at tertiary level has a utilitarian purpose. In higher education, English language becomes a tool for further developing specific education to help students in their academic studies, demonstrating communicative ability and skills in the specialized area of study. In one of the biggest Sino-British universities in mainland China, EAP is provided for the first two years of students’ university study. While in Year 1 the EAP modules are fairy generic, they move more towards an English for Specific Academic Purpose (ESAP) remit in Year 2. This presentation will consider some of the curriculum design debates on ESAP, practices and actions that have epitomised the offering of a brand new ESAP module with students from two very distinctive disciplines within the English Language Centre. It will highlight some of the syllabus developments which have taken place to ensure different academic and language skills are effectively integrated into the curriculum and assessments. Finally, areas for future development and the implications for other practitioners will be elaborated upon.
