Description

The various wastes generated during the construction period have become a problem for the green society. However, the traditional way of handling construction waste management can no longer meet the requirements of the project's sustainable life cycle. The existing construction waste management system has low operational transparency and still relies on a lot of human intervention in the traceability of waste resources, information management and legal supervision. In this article, we reviewed the existing automation methods of waste management and critically analyzed the pros and cons of the existing solutions. Afterwards, the key role of blockchain technology in construction waste management have been discussed, because it can provide traceability to resources in a decentralized treatment process. Each user terminal can obtain and add resource information, and the regulatory authority can supervise the entire process. The feedback data is dynamically monitored and stockpiled. We discussed the application scenarios of blockchain technology in different aspects of construction waste treatment, including real-time tracking of waste, credible waste resource information storage, carbon footprint management, logistics chain management and regulatory supervision of environmental authorities. We proposed an automated construction waste management framework with blockchain and internet of things (IoT), provided a prototype of a usable platform, and conducted a case study. Finally, we summarize the existing work and propose future improvements.
