Abstract
THE EXHIBITION THE THREE CITIES_offers an exploration of the theoretical foundations of the morphological and typological culture of Urban Design, which can be traced back to the generic term ‘Urban Project’. The Urban Project, a maieutic effort aimed at defining ‘new morphological syntaxes and new tools for controlling the dynamics of urban transformation’, represents the main collective contribution of Italian culture to Urban Design, a school of thought that developed mainly in the 1960s and 1970s and constitutes a fundamental reference point for the anthropogeographical approach. The morpho-typological approach and its global diffusion still require further research in terms of its impact on the contemporary approach to architecture and urban planning. Through the lens of the work of the most important “Masters”, Saverio Muratori, Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Aldo Rossi and Giorgio Grassi, students will explore the critical themes of urban planning, analysing and proposing their arguments through a series of urban compositions. A commented collection of selected lectures and related explanations will ensure adequate clarification of the contribution of this approach to the representation of the city and its components, encouraging students' creative and academic thinking. The intention is also to promote intellectual dialogue and intercultural exchange, while providing a solid basis for investigating the current implications of the state of the art of the discipline. This work is based on a previous experiment conducted at the “School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Nanjing University” in 2023/2024, as part of the study “Urban Morphology: Urban Project. Theoretical framework of Italian urban planning culture”.
