The nexus of food security, water security, and land sustainability in Africa

Food security, water security, and land sustainability are essential for livelihoods and economic development in Africa. The continent faces interconnected challenges across these three arenas. It depends on rain-fed agriculture and traditional farming methods, such as legume inter-cropping, to maintain soil health and nutrient balance. The World Economic Forum reports that approximately 257 million Africans faced food insecurity in 2021, with Sub-Saharan Africa exhibiting the highest prevalence of undernourishment globally despite arable land for agricultural productivity. This chapter explores the multifaceted challenges facing Africa in achieving food security, water security, and land sustainability, with a focus on understanding their inter-dependencies and proposing integrated solutions. Promoting sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing water management, and implementing policies that prioritize local needs and international cooperation are essential steps towards resilience and long-term sustainability. Collaboration among stakeholders is essential to address these complex challenges and ensure a secure and prosperous future for Africa.
