Abstract
Utopia exists nowhere, yet it can emerge anywhere. London, Austin, Copenhagen, and Seoul, four cities, twelve lights, and the question of what kind of city we wish to live in.
Cities are both the stage of our lives and mirrors of their time. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, amid the uncertainty of climate crises and the erosion of humanity brought about by rapid technological change, contemporary cities embody both profound challenges and deep anxieties. Yet it is precisely within this darkness that light reveals itself most clearly.
The Lights of Cities explores the distinctive lights and possibilities of London, Austin, Copenhagen, and Seoul. Drawing on their lived experiences in these cities, the authors reveal how the sparks of light they encountered may serve as beacons of hope for the imperfect cities of tomorrow.
