Abstract
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the eye diseases that occur in patients due to diabetic mellitus complications. Without an earlier diagnosis and treatment, patients suffering from DR may lose their vision permanently. Hence, this preliminary work investigates the efficacy of the use of different transfer learning models, namely VGG16, VGG19 and InceptionV3 in extracting features from the DR images classify the disease via Support Vector Machine (SVM). It was demonstrated from the preliminary work that the InceptionV3-SVM pipeline could achieve a train and test classification accuracy of 89.8% and 86.1%, respectively. The present results suggest the promising employment for auto-diagnosis of DR upon further refinement.
