Abstract

The year 2025 marked the 40th anniversary of the journal China City Planning Review (CCPR). To commemorate this milestone, a “Journal on Campus” initiative was successfully held at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University on Sept. 20, 2025. The initiative provided an open platform for academic exchange, aiming to advance discussions on “Building Liveable Cities Through Urban Regeneration in the Era of AI,” while also cultivating a broader and more diverse community of readers and contributors. It was jointly organized by the CCPR editorial department, the Design School at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, the Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Planning & Design Institute, and the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, with academic support from several universities in Suzhou. This article presents perspectives and insights shared by experts during Panel Session 1: Sustainable Community Regeneration. This panel session explored innovative approaches to regenerating urban residential communities by integrating sustainability, people-centered design, and advanced technologies. It brought together diverse perspectives, ranging from conceptual frameworks that emphasize the integration of culture, technology, and community values to practical strategies empowered by AI and flexible governance mechanisms. By examining both theoretical models and real-world applications, the article offers insights into building resilient, inclusive, and value-centered residential communities, reflecting the evolving interplay between humans, technology, and the urban environment.
