Abstract

Suara ((( Pembangunan ))): A Sonic History of National Development in Malaysia is a pilot participatory research project that seeks to craft stories about generational legacies of national development in Malaysia. It explores and interrogates the role of family memory as a resource for learning about the reality of development and provide participants the opportunity to build skills in oral history interview and sound practice. Here, we would like to trial a participatory approach with young people to document (via oral history interviews) and artistically represent (via the sound medium) generational observations associated with national development in Malaysia from the perspective of their family. This research also aims to develop a theoretically informed, publicly accessible narrative approach for youth engagement and advocacy on national development issues affecting their communities.
