Reviving Textile Heritage: AI-Driven Innovation Practices in Museum Exhibitions

This chapter examines the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the preservation and recreation of textile heritage within museum environments, with particular emphasis on AI’s large language model training and content generation for interactive experiences. The research highlights AI’s potential in creating innovative engagement experiences and enhancing the visibility of textile heritage, specifically analysing the “Zhangduan: Relief on Silk” exhibition at the Suzhou Silk Museum. The findings identify challenges such as high costs, technical limitations, and concerns regarding the authenticity of AI-generated content. The study advocates for fostering transdisciplinary collaboration, securing alternative funding sources, and improving dataset quality to ensure the sustainable integration of AI technologies. This research contributes to the discourse on digital heritage, offering insights for museums on addressing challenges and limitations in AI adoption.
