Abstract
This research investigates the impact of Chinese investments in Piraeus, highlighting the transformative power of global capital in reshaping local socio-spatial dynamics. Drawing on original ethnography conducted in Athens and Piraeus in 2023, the author employs an Area Studies perspective to unfold a striking paradox from the grassroots: while these investments have enhanced the port’s productivity and increased revenues for stakeholders, they have simultaneously fostered perceptions of exclusion among local residents. The study reveals a prevailing sense of exclusion among local residents, exposing a disconnect between the macroeconomic benefits of globalised development and the localised experiences of those living in Piraeus.
