Research output: Chapter in Book or Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter summarizes a set of real-world case studies on AI-enhanced HyFlex implementation in higher education across different cultural, disciplinary, and institutional contexts, organized using the Community of Inquiry framework. It reviews documented uses of XR-based virtual campuses, immersive and gamified 3D environments, and AI-supported tools to facilitate intercultural collaboration and learning adaptation. The chapter also examines immersive technologies applied to abstract and complex subjects, including collaborative VR laboratories, HyFlex-VR and metaverse-based learning designs, multi-institutional VR learning environments, and AI-mediated virtual spaces for philosophy education. In addition, it synthesizes cases of large language model applications for assessment and instructional alignment, such as automated grading, process-oriented AI tutor use, and course-aligned LLM systems. Further cases address AI and XR for professional skills training and the use of generative AI and avatars to support inclusive and special needs education.
