Abstract

Settlements and networks are not two separate concepts in the human production of space but are complementary and indivisible acts. While transition and permanence go hand in hand in the conversion of nature to human territory, the physical and mental dimensions of the two acts assume differing attributes. We may be able to settle in a space as small as a container, but the form of mental territory attributed to a more permanent course of living should provide a certain degree of freedom the narrow container cannot accommodate.
