Abstract

Mirage is a public art installation presented at Taipingqiao Park in Shanghai for the 2024 Xintiandi Art Festival themed Hybrid Playground. Inspired by fireworks as a symbol of shared childhood memory, the installation invites reflection on the rhythm of urban life. Gradient-colored eco-friendly nylon threads are woven into flowing screens that form a circular corridor, with colors referencing Matisse’s Wheat Sheaf, symbolizing nature and freedom. The project integrates music and responsive lighting. A gentle soundscape - featuring harp, ocean waves, and ship horns - creates a tranquil atmosphere in sync with the city’s pulse. Light moves with sound, enhancing the immersive experience. The composition closes with warm strings and brass, evoking love and belonging. As a fleeting “urban firework”, the installation offers moments of stillness, memory, and poetic reverie within the city.Except for 2024 Xintiandi Art Festival in Shanghai, the installation was also displayed at Shenzhen Lighting Festival and XJTLU.
