Abstract

This text examines the continuity between the classical tradition and modern architectural thought through the study of Hadrian’s Villa. It analyses how the complex has been interpreted by architects from the Renaissance to the present day, functioning as an active instrument for design reflection. The research is structured around the analysis of historical sources, academic experiences, and case studies. Concepts such as ruin, landscape, and memory are addressed, along with their role in shaping modern architectural sensibility. The text reviews key contributions from the Grand Tour, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism, identifying their influence on the work of architects such as Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, and Stirling. It argues that Hadrian’s Villa acts as a typological and symbolic archive, offering operative references for architecture. The article concludes that contemporary architecture continues to formulate its project upon inherited structures, and that the villa, in this sense, is not merely an object of study but a site from which to critically reflect on architectural practice.
