Leveraging Industrial Internet Platforms for Sustainable Construction Waste Management: A Multi-Case Study on Resource Integration and Digital Transformation

Research output: Chapter in Book or Report/Conference proceedingConference Proceedingpeer-review

Abstract

China’s construction industry generates substantial solid waste, yet efficient recycling and disposal remain challenging due to fragmented supply chains and information asymmetry. This study investigates the role of industrial internet platforms in addressing these barriers through a case analysis of seven transaction-oriented platforms in engineering materials, machinery, and waste disposal. Combining descriptive case summaries and functional classification, the research identifies three core mechanisms: resource aggregation, transaction assurance, and credit system development. Key findings reveal that platforms such as the Idle Construction Waste Auction Service Platform enhance reverse logistics for construction waste by integrating multi-stakeholder participation, including suppliers, recyclers, and third-party auction agencies, alongside digital tools such as IoT-enabled tracking and competitive bidding. However, limitations persist, including platform homogenization, limited market spillover effects, and insufficient policy alignment. The study concludes that industrial internet platforms can mitigate construction waste management inefficiencies by improving resource visibility and transaction transparency. Recommendations include fostering public-private partnerships, standardizing platform operations through unified technical protocols, and aligning digital strategies with national circular economy policies to maximize environmental and economic synergies.
