Interactive, AI-generated climate fiction materials: A case study using the 4A framework

    Abstract

    This design-based exploratory case study examines the potential of interactive, AI-gener ated climate fiction (cli-fi) materials to support English-language learners at a Sino-British university. Cli-fi is a relatively new genre which engages and educates young adults on environmental sustainability. AI tools were employed to streamline the creation of story outlines and multimedia components, providing immersive content to engage the student experience. Built using H5P (HTML5 protocol), the materials integrate interactive storytelling with embedded comprehension tasks. To ensure the quality and effectiveness of these digital materials, we apply the 4A framework (Rice & Ortiz, 2021) to assess how well the materials promote accessibility, active engagement, advocacy for inclusion, and accountability. The goal is to gain insights into using interactive stories and AI in language education, offering innovative approaches to materials design, while simultaneously promoting language learning and educating students on the sustainable issues our planet is facing.
