Abstract

The electrochemistry of the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox couple in aqueous solution at carbon electrodes is shown to be catalyzed by surface quinone groups intrinsically present in the carbon surface. Such mediation has long been speculated but hitherto unproven.
