Abstract
High frequency switching voltage waveforms from three-phase PWM inverters generate common mode voltage in machine windings. This common mode voltage is potentially harmful to the bearings and can lead to electric discharge machining (EDM) bearing current through the parasitic capacitance in the machine. This paper presents a detailed model to calculate the parasitic capacitance in random wound windings. Comparison has been made with the uniform placed winding and the random placed winding in terms of both the bearing voltage and the EDM bearing current. The advantage of this detailed winding model is that it takes the end-winding effect, the turn-to-turn capacitance, and the randomness of winding distribution into account, which improves the accuracy and hence it is suitable for other studies of high frequency phenomenon in machine drives such as the voltage stress along the windings and the electromagnetic interference.
