Context: RDF-funded research project, “Global Traditions in Natural Dyeing.”
This installation, Drift - In the Blue Between, is an atmospheric field of color and tex-
ture. 25 circular frames in 3 different sizes—dyed in deep indigo and radiant turmer-
ic—are suspended in space, creating a layered, immersive environment. This work is
an exploration of unfinishedness and imperfection as profound cultural expressions.
The dyeing process—a deliberate practice of folding, binding, dipping, and surren-
dering to organic reactions—transforms each fabric into a living canvas of unpre-
dictable, transient textures. The physical gaps between the hanging textiles are as
intentional as the patterns themselves, creating a rhythmic, architectural void that
invites contemplation.
Conceptually, the installation engages with notions of poetic space and materi-
al intelligence. The indeterminate textures and spatial intervals evoke Gaston Ba-
chelard’s poetic voids, while the dyeing process—a nuanced balance of control
and surrender—mirrors philosophical inquiries into emptiness as a transformative,
holding space. This makes the work a meditation on unfinishedness as a form of cul-
tural continuity and a dialogue between traditional craft and contemporary spatial
research.
