Abstract
Chasing the Light is a 30-40 minute documentary exploring the challenges of animal welfare and the quest for legal protections for companion and stray animals in mainland China. Initiated in 2019, the project centers on Mary and Zita, a mother-daughter duo in Guangzhou who have independently rescued stray animals since 2003. Through their journey, the film highlights grassroots efforts like TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), collaboration with veterinary clinics, and the systemic obstacles faced by rescuers, including limited resources and lack of legal frameworks. The documentary also engages with international organizations such as Animals Asia and RSPCA to contrast global practices with China’s nascent legislative progress, exemplified by recent proposals for urban pet management.
Directed by Kaisi Wang, an experienced filmmaker and educator, the project blends storytelling with advocacy, aiming to raise public awareness, promote humane education, and inspire legislative action. Filmed across Guangzhou and supported by interviews with activists and NGOs, the documentary underscores the intersection of animal welfare, societal values, and environmental stewardship. Post-production and festival submissions are underway, with plans to expand into educational initiatives and policy dialogues. Chasing the Light aspires to catalyze societal change, fostering empathy and sustainable solutions for human-animal coexistence.
