Abstract

This paper presents a novel framework for preserving nomadic textile heritage through blockchain-based immutable storage, specifically targeting Al Sadu weaving traditions. The authors formalize weaving patterns as integer matrices (M ∈ ℤᵐˣⁿ) and encode them as Non-Fungible Tokens via custom Solidity smart contracts on Ethereum, creating cryptographically secured, provenance-tracked digital representations. Using Grasshopper parametric modeling to generate geometric patterns, the system demonstrates feasibility of decentralized cultural heritage preservation with embedded access control and ownership mechanisms. However, the research critically acknowledges fundamental tensions between discrete mathematical representation and continuous material culture, highlighting constraints including blockchain storage inefficiencies, loss of tactile and intangible dimensions, and risks of excluding originating communities from technologically mediated preservation systems. The work advances computational heritage research by revealing how distributed ledger technology can enable unprecedented decentralization and permanence while simultaneously exposing the profound challenges of translating embodied cultural practices into computational abstractions—underscoring the imperative for culturally responsive governance frameworks that balance technological innovation with community agency and living tradition.
