Abstract

KIMVI presents a captivating performance exploring the quest for an authentic narrative in the rural landscapes of China. Against the stunning backdrop of Southern China's countryside, KIMVI collaborates with local villager Auntie Luo Juhua, affectionately referred to as "Auntie," to create a visually mesmerising and culturally significant piece of art.

Through the use of salvaged traditional roof tiles, Auntie's simple action becomes the foundation of the performance, with KIMVI using her physicality to draw attention to the connection between architectural design and human potential. The film, inspired by traditional Chinese hand-scroll landscape paintings, aims to highlight the importance of preserving traditions while emphasising the significance of exchanging knowledge and understanding between different cultures. In "Auntie's Tiles," KIMVI creates a bridge between locals and foreigners, forming a deep sense of place and community spirit.
