Abstract

The significance of this research arises from its potential to
support the transformation of Chinese Higher Education as it
modernizes in response to rapid change. In Western
institutions, Academic Development (AD) now plays an
important strategic role in institutional transformation agendas
where the focus is on shifting academics’ practices, especially
in the context of increasing levels of digitalization. The
research explores and compares emerging identities and
practices between China and Australia at a time when
identities and practices in the Western context are also under
discussion, as academic developers respond to transformation
agendas. By undertaking a collaborative study between a
group of Academic Developers at La Trobe University and
Fudan University, the research addresses issues relating to the
professionalization of Academic Developers in both contexts,
including induction into the profession, and address how this
work can support the modernization of teaching practices in
both countries.
