Abstract

Enhancing urban ecosystem resilience is fundamental to high-quality and sustainable urban development. Urban renewal is a crucial tool for balancing ecological conservation with functional improvement, necessitating a systematic methodological framework. This study proposes an integrated "Ecology-Spatial-Needs" framework that identifies optimal pathways for coupling ecological resource protection, functional space optimisation, and residents’ spatial needs. The framework consists of three stages. Firstly, ecological network analysis is used to identify critical ecological corridors, repairing fragmentation caused by rapid urbanisation and strengthening ecosystem resilience as a basis for sustainable development. Secondly, multi-source data evaluation assesses environmental conditions and facility distributions, and identifies renewal needs by incorporating population density and age structure. Thirdly, the analysis of the ecological network is combined with the demand for renewal to formulate targeted renewal strategies that promote the coordinated development of ecological and functional urban spaces. The framework is empirically validated in the Wujiang District, Suzhou. The results indicate that high renewal needs are concentrated in the centre of Songling and Shengze Town and along the ecological patches like Fen Lake, Yuandang Lake, and Taipu River. Based on these findings, the study proposes strategies for constructing ecological migration corridors, recreational greenways, and low-carbon transit corridors to guide the "parkification" of urban functional areas toward ecologically livable spaces. The proposed framework offers systematic theoretical guidance and data-driven support for urban renewal decision-making, promotes coordinated optimisation of ecological functions and urban spaces, and enhances urban resilience and vitality.
