Abstract
Dougong is one of the most common components in the mortise-and-tenon structural system of traditional Chinese architecture. Constructed from timber, it exhibits a high degree of complexity—and this complexity also serves as a key factor limiting its application in modern architecture. With the widespread adoption of digital technologies, the development of parametric design has provided architects with a new technical approach to studying Dougong’s construction logic and applying it to modern architectural contexts.
Based on parametric technology, this paper proposes a design method to reinterpret Dougong components and integrate them into the structural systems of modern buildings. Using finite element analysis (FEA) networks and digital optimisation techniques, a comparative study and characteristic analysis of both original Dougong components and their translated (reinterpreted) counterparts are conducted. This not only verifies the feasibility of the proposed research method and pathway but also enables an in-depth exploration of the traditional construction principles underlying Dougong—an essential structural joint—as well as the translation mechanism required for its design and construction in modern architectural applications.
