Description
This TDF/EASE project plans to propose a student-centred, project-based, interdisciplinary undergraduate programme – “BEng Smart City and Spatial Planning”. Specifically,
Project-based: Given that Urban/Rural projects are probably the most VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) cases in the real world, this new programme will be delivered based on three UPD project themes: “Sustainable Rural Revitalization”, “Smart Urban Regeneration”, “Spatial Planning for Low-altitude Economy”. UPD/DES teaching team will work closely with industrial partners to identify suitable real-world projects in order to equip students with the following:
• Planning competency: providing a vision for the future, and then come up with short- and long-term strategic action plans to achieve it, in collaboration with others.
• Design thinking: critical, innovative and creative thinking of our everyday life based on empathy and imagination, and the capability of “thinking outside of the Box (AIGC)”.
Interdisciplinary: Besides UPD/DES based modules, staff from IBSS (Strategic Management and Organisation) will co-develop/teach some modules to equip students with necessary business mindset (for strategic planning and management), and staff from Academy of AI and Advanced Technology (Artificial Intelligence + Data Science and Big Data Technology with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism) will co-develop/teach some modules to equip students with technical skills linked to AI and Big Data. Certainly, this programme can be further linked to other disciplines in future where appropriate.
Student-centred: Students enrolled in this new programme will be given room to explore their own interests and future career development plans step-by-step through a learning-by-doing process. Depending on the modules/credits that the students choose to take/achieve during Year 2 to 4, he/she can be awarded with the following degrees (Fig 1):
• XJTLU: BEng Smart City and Spatial Planning, and
• UoL: BA Urban Planning / BA Environment and Planning; or BSc Business Administration / BA Digital and Intelligent Marketing; or BEng Artificial Intelligence / BEng Data Science and Big Data Technology with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism
In producing this programme, the project will also develop governance models for the management and delivery of interdisciplinary undergraduate programmes at XJTLU and beyond, including forging negotiation pathways for approvals under relevant guidelines.
