Description
Natural dyeing, a cornerstone of global cultural heritage and a sustainable alternative to synthetic processes, is experiencing a significant revival. However, many intricate techniques and pattern-making methods remain siloed within specific cultural contexts, under-documented, and at risk of being lost. This project, “Global Traditions in Natural Dyeing,” is situated at the intersection of cultural preservation, sustainable design, and participatory art research. It seeks to address this gap by creating a structured platform for intercultural dialogue and co-creation. The project moves beyond unilateral study by positioning itself as a collaborative exchange, bringing together master artists from regions
with deep dyeing traditions—such as Suzhou (China, renowned for silk and plant dyes), Japan (Shibori resist techniques), India (block printing), and Egypt (historic symbolic dyes).
By facilitating workshops where these artists can share, teach, and experiment together, the project aims to document endangered knowledge, spark innovation through the fusion of techniques, and explore the scalability of local, biodegradable materials. This background establishes the urgent need for such an initiative to safeguard intangible cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary sustainable textile design.
