Description

Suzhou’s Grand Canal boasts a distinctive heritage, but appreciating its full historical significance can be challenging for the naked eye. Digital technologies have become commonplace in elucidating a locale's past for residents and visitors. Practices like Extended Reality gain traction in China and globally to tell stories of the past. Research has also underscored the educational and engagement benefits of such immersive experiences. Through a synergistic approach, this research aims to harness these advancements and identify pilot pathways for developing Augmented Reality (AR) digital experiences to unveil the historical scenes and activities along Suzhou’s Grand Canal. It capitalizes on the project team's existing partnerships with local government agencies overseeing archive, conservation, tourism, museum, and planning while further expanding collaboration with industry partners specializing in digital visualization. The anticipated outcomes of this research endeavor will inform government agencies of viable AR projects breathing new life into the Grand Canal’s past.
