Description
The classical latticed windows (chuanghua 花窗) of Suzhou's UNESCO-listed gardens embody centuries of skilled hand-crafting, yet this intangible craft is increasingly difficult to sustain through conventional artisan training alone. This project investigates how 3D concrete printing (3DCP), guided by space-filling curve geometry, can reinvent the making of Suzhou garden-pocket landscape components, 3DCP screens and parametric benches, as a continuous, non-stop toolpath process rather than a series of interrupted segments. Building on our team's prior 3DCP fractal lattice-shell research, we will develop a computational design and toolpath-generation workflow linking space-filling-curve logics to authentic Suzhou window patterns, translating them into printable, structurally sound 3DCP screens and parametric benches for Suzhou's garden-pocket landscapes. Physical prototypes will be produced and evaluated for print quality, structural performance and aesthetic fidelity, culminating in a demonstrator installation proposed for Suzhou's Gusu Historic District, in collaboration with the Gusu District Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau.
