Dr. Netzahualcoyotl Hernandez-Cruz (Netza) specialises in AI research for global health, focusing on ubiquitous and pervasive computing to develop innovative strategies for automating diagnostics and improving healthcare accessibility. Netza holds a Bachelor of Information Technology from Mexico’s National Technological Institute, a Master’s in Computer Science from CICESE, and a PhD in Computer Engineering from Ulster University; he also holds an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of his professional practice in supporting teaching and learning in higher education in the UK. Following the completion of his doctorate, he joined the University of Oxford as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
His most recent work focused on developing machine learning-based models to analyse fetal echocardiography video sweeps for congenital heart defects, as well as techniques for knowledge transfer across heterogeneous machine learning models. His contributions have been recognised through academic and entrepreneurial awards, as well as endorsements from Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology and the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering.
As an Assistant Professor in the School of AI and Advanced Computing at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Netza’s work bridges research and real-world applications by developing scalable, user-friendly medical AI tools in collaboration with stakeholders. Through this interdisciplinary approach, he contributes to the next generation of global health technologies, ensuring AI-driven medical innovations are both accessible and transformative worldwide.
