Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr. Zhuo Xu (许晫) is an Assistant Professor at the School of Intelligent Manufacturing Ecosystem, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Before joining XJTLU, Dr. Xu received his PhD in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2024. His research focuses on the structural integrity of metamaterials fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM). Specifically, he investigated the associations between metamaterials and their mechanical properties when fabricating with AM technologies, which can be used as engineering tools for the predictions. He also worked as a researcher at NTNU from 2024-2025.

During his PhD, Dr. Xu received multiple recognitions including the Best Poster and Young Scientist award competition by the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), Chinese government scholarship award for outstanding PhD candidates abroad and several international conference travel grants from Norwegian University Foundation. His research outcomes have been published in high-impact international journals, such as International Journal of fatigue (JCR Q1) and Engineering Structures (JCR Q1). He also served as an independent reviewer for multiple international journals including International Journal of Mechanical Sciences and Composites Part B.

In addition, Dr. Xu acquired industrial experience as an AM specialist at Elkem Silicones in Shanghai, China for two years and as a metallic AM scientist at SD3D in San Diego, United States for one year prior to doctoral studies. He has been actively conducting experimental and numerical studies on the fracture and fatigue behavior of additively manufactured metamaterials, with a specific focus on design, manufacturing and property relation. His research group is currently seeking for enthusiastic, self-motivated students with a genuine passion about scientific discovery. All PhD candidates, graduate students as well as undergraduate students are welcomed to apply.
