Dr. Yiping Dong is an Associate Professor and an experienced PhD supervisor in the Department of Architecture, Design School, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and Coordinator of the History, Theory and Heritage Lab. She graduated from Tongji University and pursued further studies at European universities, including ETH Zurich. A trained architect, architectural historian, conservation researcher and practitioner, she is actively engaged in research on architectural history and heritage.
She has been at the forefront of international education since the founding of the Department of Architecture at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in 2012. Her teaching and service cover architectural design studios, architectural history and theory across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As Deputy Programme Director and an experienced module leader, she has supported the RIBA validation of the Department of Architecture for the past three consecutive rounds.
Her research interests include heritage theory, Chinese architectural history and theory in a global context, industrial heritage and heritage-led regeneration, architectural design in context, and the adaptive reuse of buildings. She is Deputy Secretary of the Urban-Rural Built Heritage Committee of the Architectural Society of China, an academic member of the Industrial Architecture Heritage Academic Committee (IAHAC) of China, a board member and national representative of TICCIH (International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage), and Vice President of the ACHS (Association of Critical Heritage Studies). She served as academic coordinator and programme leader of the WHITRAP-XJTLU Advanced Training Course in Sustainable Development and Built Heritage for the Asia-Pacific region (2019–2020). In 2023, she was invited as a visiting professor at Sapienza University of Rome. In 2025, she was appointed a jury member for the Dissertation category of the RIBA President's Medals.
Dr. Dong also serves as a reviewer for multiple heritage and architectural history journals, including Heritage Architecture, Built Heritage, Architecture and Culture, and the International Journal of Heritage Studies. Her recent research focuses on the cultural revitalisation of urban–rural heritage in China and on anthropological approaches to landscape, urban and architectural history. She co-initiated the China Yanping Art Harvest project (2018–2020), the Safeguarding Heritage and Community of Shuangta Research Project (2021–2023), and the 2024 Kunming Dianchi Art Festival. Her recent monograph is The Architecture of Suzhou (2026).
