Personal profile

Dr Victoria Wan Hu is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Literary and Translation Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. She is one of the first translation scholars to research and publish on the dynamic nexus between university education and translation market needs.

Dr Hu is the author of Translator Education for Changing Markets (Cambridge University Press, 2026) and Education, Translation and Global Market Pressures: Curriculum Design in China and the UK (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018), co-author of Practical Course of Financial News Translation and Listening to Financial and Economic News for Translation Purpose (Tsinghua University Press, 2019), and the co-editor of Chinese News Discourse in the Digital Era (Routledge, 2026). She has also published widely in international peer-reviewed journals and edited collections on her focused research areas: translator and interpreter education, digital media translation, translation competence, and translation market research.

Dr Hu has a track record of securing external research funding. She is the recipient of the two Jiangsu Province Talent Programmes: "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctor" and "Qinglan Project Excellent Young Scholar". In addition, she is currently or has previously conducted various projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, China International Communications Group (CICG), and the China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education, among others.

Dr Hu has much experience in educational programme design and development. She held a central role in the founding and strategic development of three translation programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels while working in a top-tier university in Beijing. At XJTLU, she initiated and developed a new BA Translation and Interpreting programme with colleagues and served as its founding programme director for three years.

In terms of learning and teaching, Dr Hu is an award winner of national level teaching innovation and contest in China, including the 2025 Ministry of Education (MoE) Exemplary Higher Education Virtual Simulation Teaching Innovation Case Award. She has taught a broad range of translation and interpreting modules, both practical and theoretical. The highlight of her teaching innovation is the digital media translation module, co-taught with China Daily and CGTN through a university-industry in-depth collaboration network.

Before joining XJTLU, Dr Hu studied and worked in China and the UK. In addition to the academic experience, she has worked as a professional translator, interpreter, and international coordinator for high-level Sino-British diplomatic training programmes since 2011.
