Sam has worked as an English Language tutor since 2005, teaching in Poland, Spain and the UK. From 2008 to 2019, Sam worked in the UK Higher Education sector, teaching EAP in Cardiff University, Newcastle University and Durham University, before moving to Suzhou in November 2019.Sam holds a BA in English Literature, an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Regarding teaching qualifications, Sam holds a CELTA, DELTA, and PG Cert in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education. Sam is a Fellow of BALEAP and the Higher Education Academy.Sams principle research interests relate to EAP curriculum development, discipline-specific language acquisition, TEAP pedagogies, and exploring cultural influences on student and teacher engagement. As the Deputy Head of the ELC PG Division and Head of Pre-Sessional English, Sam created XJTLUs first online pre-sessional course in 2020 and led the pre-sessional to achieve BALEAP course accreditation in 2022. As an ELC BALEAP Rep and trained TEAP observer, Sam is keen to improve awareness of and engagement with BALEAP in TNE contexts, and can help guide ELC teachers and module leaders to seek individual and course accreditation with BALEAP.

Developing TEAP pedagogies in TNE contexts
Embedding interdisciplinarity in EAP curriculum design
Tailoring postgraduate curriculum design through inter-departmental needs analysis
Exploring the effect of peer review training to help students understand and utilise assessment criteria in the writing process
Improving students’ knowledge and use of subject-specific lexis with personalised corpora
Investigating cultural influences on teacher and student engagement
Investigating the effects of transitioning to an online learning environment on several aspects of EAP. These include how expectations of online learning affect student performance and how listening materials can be exploited in online courses
