Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr. Yang Rui received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and M.A. in Bilingual School Counseling from New York University. Her research centers on two strands: (1) how gender norms and expectations shape children’s and adolescents’ development and well-being, and (2) how early caregiving experiences impact long-term developmental trajectories. She conducts China-focused and cross-cultural studies using longitudinal, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, with particular interest in gender norms and secure-base-script knowledge as mechanisms of socioemotional development. Committed to strengthening the field’s cultural relevance, she engages critically with the WEIRD problem and centers power and context across her teaching and research. Beyond academia, Dr. Yang translates psychological science for broad audiences through widely read social-media articles and by curating and hosting podcast programs that bring research into everyday conversation.
