Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr. Juan Li is an Assistant Professor whose research focuses on conservation biology, integrating traditional field ecology with emerging data science technologies—including big data analytics, culturomics, and artificial intelligence—to advance biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

Since 2009, Dr. Li has dedicated her research to snow leopard ecology and conservation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, addressing critical issues such as climate refugia, conservation landscape prioritization, human-wildlife conflict, and the role of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in conservation. Learn more about this research journey in her talk at Yixi: https://yixi.tv/#/speech/detail?id=1155

In recent years, her work has expanded to leverage big data and AI: using social media platforms to track urban wildlife resurgence in China, analyzing global biodiversity databases to understand agricultural impacts on avian functional traits, and employing large language models to identify effective surrogate species for conservation.

Dr. Li has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals including Conservation Biology, Biological Conservation, and Current Biology, and contributed chapters to "Snow Leopards" (Elsevier, 2016 & 2023). She serves as an editor for Biodiversity Science and Integrative Conservation, and welcomes undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students interested in biodiversity conservation, human-nature interactions, or AI applications in conservation to join her research team.
