José Remón is a PhD Architect and Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. His doctoral thesis, Mass Housing in Shanghai (1840–2012): The Survival of Modernism in Contemporary China, examines the four existing typologies of mass housing in the city, analyzing them within their historical, cultural, social, and architectural contexts.
His professional practice has developed across Spain, the United Kingdom, and China, where he has been based since 2009. He has collaborated with internationally recognized offices including EMBT, Spark Architects, Josep Llinàs, Domingo i Ferré, and Chapman Taylor. Since 2014, he has led his own architecture studio, developing projects across Spain, Mexico, and China.
At XJTLU, he serves as Director of the Master of Architecture programme and participates in several international academic initiatives, most notably the City Scales Workshop, organised within XJTLU in collaboration with La Salle and the University of Moratuwa.
His research interests focus on architectural theory and practice, with particular attention to typological studies, especially housing and mixed-use developments, frequently using Shanghai as a case study to investigate processes of urban transformation and the persistence of modernist paradigms. His work also engages with aesthetics as a branch of philosophy of art and with the humanities as applied to architectural thinking. In parallel, he is interested in the application of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, in architectural practice.
