Ho-Pun Lam is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Prior to this appointment, he served as a Senior Research Scientist at Data61, CSIRO, and as a Researcher at NICTA in Australia. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Queensland.
His primary research interests lie in computational law, non-monotonic reasoning, and formal models of normative reasoning, with a particular focus on developing algorithms to enhance the computational efficiency of defeasible reasoning under different variants. His work spans diverse application domains, including Legal Informatics, Business Process Compliance, UAV navigation, IoT systems, and the Semantic Web.
More recently, his research has extended to the integration of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and agentic AI for legal reasoning. This includes leveraging advanced NLP techniques to extract, model, and formalize normative structures from legal texts, and designing agentic AI systems capable of autonomous legal reasoning, compliance analysis, argument generation, and decision support within complex regulatory environments.
