Francesco Macheda is an Associate Professor of Political Economy in the Department of International Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Before joining XJTLU in 2022, Dr. Macheda worked as an Associate Professor at Bifröst University, Iceland. During his ‘Nordic years’, Francesco has been regularly invited by the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Florence (Italy) to teach modules and provide seminars in the fields of macroeconomics and development economics. At the same time, Dr. Macheda served as representative for Iceland at the European Cooperation in Field of Scientific and Technical Research COST-action 18215 ‘China in Europe Research Network’. Dr. Macheda’s interest and knowledge of the economic and political relations between China and already developed countries were empowered by his research conducted as Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of World Politics and Economics (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) funded by the Confucius Institute Headquarters in 2019. Prior to that, Dr. Macheda had also the opportunity to supplement his theoretical knowledge with field experience gained at the International Labour Organization, researching pension systems, industrial relations, and labor migration in Southeast Asian Countries.Dr. Macheda’s fields of expertise are economic growth and development, structural change, and economic policy. His publications include articles in the Review of Radical Political Economics, Capital Class, Forum for Social Economics, Review of Industrial Economics and Policy, Review of African Political Economy, International Critical Thought, Journal of Labor and Society, and others. Francesco’s current research interest focuses on the role of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and public policies in improving systemic competitiveness – with China serving as a reference point.
