Description

This workshop aims to explore how buildings and sites with difficult pasts—such as prisons, asylums, slaughterhouses and colonial institutions—are being repurposed today. Building on the organisers’ foundational work on the concept of “uncomfortable heritage,” this workshop provides a platform for critical dialogue on the ethical, material, and interpretive challenges of adaptive reuse. Through case studies and theoretical discussions, participants will examine how architecture, memory, and meaning intersect, and how new narratives can provoke reflection, discomfort, or even transformation in the ways societies engage with their pasts.
