Description

Global environmental challenges such as climate change are prompting designers across a wide range of spectrum to reflect on the values and purposes of their professional practices. For landscape architects, urban planners, and urban designers, one pressing question is how to reinvent public space, finding a fine-grained balance between the social and the ecological. This lecture examines latest works by the global-leading landscape architecture and urban design firm Sasaki Associates that attempt to re-conceptualize the ‘public realm’ in time of global environmental crises. These works range from small-size public plaza regenerations in Boston (USA) to the metropolitan-scaled project of Ellinikon Park in Athens (Greece)—the largest-ever urban regeneration initiative in Europe. The lecture will underscore the importance of design thinking in creating a built environment that is responsive and accommodating to both social needs and ecological considerations.
