The project examines parents’ and childrens’ responsibilities, identities, and narrative roles in China’s New Era science fiction films. This project will compare and contrast mothers and fathers in relation to the gender of their children, as well as compare and contrast sons and daughters. The study examines theatrically released films, such as逆时营救Reset (2017), 流浪地球The Wandering Earth (2019, 2023) films and 明日战记 明日戰記 Warriors of Future (2022), as well as small-budget productions released on streaming services like 火星异变 Mutation on Mars (2021) and 末日救援 Earth Rescue Day (2021). The examination will utilize narrative, formal, and textual analysis. The project aims to understand family relations and identity and place these in context with concepts and ideologies from historical and contemporary Chinese society. The aim is to understand the ideological messages about parenting and childhood China’s projections of the future.
