Mining the Voice of the Global South: A Text-as-Data Study of G77 Speeches

Activity: Supervision › Completed SURF Project

Description

This project examines how the Group of 77 (G77), a coalition of developing countries, represents the voice of the Global South in international forums. We will collect official G77 statements from the United Nations, build a structured text dataset, and use accessible computational tools to analyze recurring themes, keywords, and rhetorical patterns in these speeches. The findings will provide insights into how developing countries frame key issues such as development, inequality, climate change, and global governance, as well as how they articulate shared interests and negotiate their position in global politics. The project also demonstrates how qualitative approaches—such as close reading and discourse analysis—can be combined with quantitative text analysis to study political discourse in a systematic and rigorous way. By integrating data collection with textual analysis, students will gain hands-on experience in research design and computational methods.
