Since 2014, Chinese Culture Teaching Centre (CCTC) has introduced ‘Student Instructor’, and recruited competent students who have spare time and teaching capacity to deliver elective courses to their peers. All applicants for student instructors must go through CV screening, onsite interview (teaching demonstration), and submit a clear teaching syllabus. So far around 250 student instructors have made their debuts in free electives, and they are not only undergraduates and postgraduates, but also international students from United States, South Korea, India and other countries. Most elective courses that student instructors applied for relate to general capability, self-management and physical education & arts. These courses mainly involve hands-on practices, and are quite popular among students. According to student satisfaction questionnaire, 4.79 out of 5 received from participants (415) of 15 elective courses delivered by student instructors last semester, which is above the average of all free electives. As for knowledge acquisition, about 93% participants agreed that student instructors’ electives motivate their learning interest and achieve the teaching objectives. Overall, around 89% students strongly agreed that these elective courses enhance their learning experience, and no one is unsatisfied. Student instructors also addressed that they could acquire new knowledge and develop active learning ability through this reflective teaching process. In a qualitative interview, all student instructors (15) agreed that they have improved their self-confidence, oral presentation, communication skills and active learning awareness. In summary, Student Instructor is helpful to enhance learning experience of both student participants and student instructors themselves in free electives.| Period | 1 Jun 2022 |
