Intercultural Emotional Experiences in University Group Work: A Qualitative Study of Chinese Students at XJTLU

Activity: SupervisionMaster Dissertation Supervision

Description

This study investigated the emotional experiences of Chinese students in intercultural group collaborative learning at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), aiming to analyze the nuanced understanding of emotional adaptation in Chinese and foreign contexts based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, social-emotional learning (SEL), and Gross's emotion regulation framework.
This study employed a qualitative research design to capture the real experiences of seven Chinese students from different disciplines through semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, and the emotional dynamics of Chinese students were systematically analyzed based on the theoretical framework.
The findings reveal that cultural dimensions play a crucial role in triggering emotions, and that emotion regulation centers on two culturally embedded strategies to promote acculturative growth. The purpose of the study is to improve the quality of teaching methods and to provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the formulation of future teaching methods and the intercultural development of students.
