A disciple of ink master Wu Yangmu, Xia Xiaobin's brushwork carries the soul of classical Jiangnan landscapes. After a 40-year interlude in design and business, he returned to ink painting at 74 with newfound freedom—transforming rigorous gongbi techniques into dynamic contemporary expressions. His works pulse with the energy of a master who rediscovered his first love, proving ink's eternal vitality when wielded by experienced hands.

This session examines the interdisciplinary dialogue between ink wash painting and architecture, exploring their shared philosophical foundations (e.g., Daoist harmony, yijing 意境) and technical synergies. We analyze how ink techniques—such as wuse mo (五色墨) layering, pòmò (破墨) diffusion, and spatial void-filling—inform architectural color atmospheres, form language, and cultural narratives. Case studies, including I.M. Pei’s Suzhou Museum, demonstrate the translation of ink’s fluidity into built environments. The workshop further investigates art’s role in architectural pedagogy, emphasizing aesthetic cultivation, innovation, and cultural continuity.
