Description

The guest lecture “Drought – Lago di Pergusa Unveiled” introduces the ARC304 brief “Living without water: the other side of the climate changes. Architectural responses for Sicily” through the perspective of Sicilian-born independent photographer Gianni Cipriano. Drawing from his work for The New York Times and other international publications, Cipriano presents Lago di Pergusa as a case study of drought and desertification, combining photography, reportage, and personal insights.
This lecture provides students with their first in-depth connection to the site of Pergusa Lake, framing the physical, cultural, and social context of Sicily’s environmental challenges. By highlighting the interplay between drought, agriculture, tourism, and local communities, the session equips students with critical awareness of the pressing issue of desertification. Cipriano’s photographs and narrative establish a foundation for site analysis and research, fostering a deeper understanding of how architecture can respond to climate-driven transformations.
