From Parametric Thinking to Intelligent Futures: Reflections on Digital Design Research and Education

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This talk reflects on my journey from parametric and computational design at HKU to current research on AI, digital twins, and intelligent urban futures. It examines how design education has evolved, from scripting and form generation to systems thinking, automation, and machine learning, and how these shifts reshape research and practice. Drawing on international examples, I will discuss the implications for PhD education in building technology and digital design, particularly within China’s rapidly transforming research landscape. The presentation advocates for a speculative yet grounded approach to doctoral inquiry, positioning design as a mode of intelligence that integrates technology, creativity, and human experience in shaping tomorrow's cities.
