Family day for IDI 2025 Shanghai - community engagement workshop

Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Organising an event e.g. a conference, workshop, …

Description

Inspired by Gio Ponti’s iconic blue tile designs and the Infinite Matrix workshop conducted at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), this Family Day event for IDI 2025 Shanghai brings together families, students, and design enthusiasts in a shared creative experience that fosters community engagement and intergenerational collaboration. Following Ponti’s 1960 experiment with tiles for the Princes’ Park Hotel in Sorrento, the activities are designed to be accessible and enjoyable, operating independently of any specific design discipline while nurturing creative thinking, mutual learning, and collective exploration across generations. By participating together, community members not only discover the universal principles of modular design but also strengthen social bonds through hands-on making and shared discovery.

The event features two hands-on activities:

Activity 1 – “Colour Your Tile” (for children with parents): Young participants are introduced to Ponti’s modular patterns through a playful colouring exercise, using pre-designed tile templates to explore how colour and simple forms can transform a basic module into unique, imaginative designs.
Activity 2 – “Tile Composition + Shooting” (for high school students and families): Building on the Infinite Matrix methodology, participants construct harmonious rectangular arrangements starting from a square module and document their compositions through photography, bridging physical making with digital storytelling and capturing the endless variations that emerge from a single foundational element.

Together, these activities offer a fun, educational, and socially enriching experience that celebrates design as a vehicle for community connection and creative expression.
