Embodied Urbanism.A Phenomenology of the Body in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk

Description

The International Conference on Spatial Intelligence (SPINCON) is a global academic platform dedicated to advancing the emerging field of spatial intelligence—an interdisciplinary domain that explores how humans and intelligent systems perceive, represent, reason about, and interact with space across physical and digital environments. As artificial intelligence continues to move beyond purely data-driven paradigms into embodied, environment-aware systems, spatial intelligence is increasingly recognized as a foundational capability bridging disciplines such as architecture, computer science, robotics, geography, and cognitive science. SPINCON aims to serve as a focal point for this convergence, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and innovators who are shaping the next frontier of intelligence in space.

SPINCON was first initiated in 2025 as a small-scale, invitation-based workshop that gathered a select group of researchers and collaborators interested in the conceptual foundations of spatial intelligence. Although modest in size, this initial meeting played a critical role in establishing the intellectual direction of the conference. It provided an environment for in-depth discussion, early-stage idea exchange, and the articulation of key research questions that define the field today. The success of this inaugural gathering demonstrated both the necessity and the urgency of a dedicated forum for spatial intelligence, laying the groundwork for SPINCON’s expansion into a fully international conference.

Building on this foundation, SPINCON-2026 marks the official launch of the conference as a large-scale international event. It brings together a diverse global community across academia, industry, and interdisciplinary research domains. The conference is designed to foster dialogue between theoretical inquiry and practical application, covering topics such as spatial perception and sensing, representation and modeling of space, AI-driven reasoning in spatial environments, digital twins and simulation, and intelligent systems operating in built and natural contexts. By structuring the conference around both foundational principles and applied systems, SPINCON seeks to provide a comprehensive view of spatial intelligence as a coherent and evolving discipline.

A distinguishing feature of SPINCON is its commitment to interdisciplinary integration. Spatial intelligence is not confined to a single domain; rather, it exists at the intersection of multiple fields that traditionally operate in isolation. SPINCON encourages collaboration between architects and AI researchers, urban scientists and robotics engineers, data scientists and cognitive theorists. Through keynote lectures, technical sessions, and collaborative discussions, the conference creates opportunities for participants to exchange perspectives, develop shared frameworks, and explore new research directions. This integrative approach is essential for addressing complex challenges such as urban sustainability, human-centered design, autonomous systems, and the seamless interaction between digital and physical worlds.

Looking ahead, SPINCON aspires to become a leading international platform for defining and advancing spatial intelligence as a new academic and technological paradigm. Beyond the annual conference, it aims to contribute to the development of standardized frameworks, collaborative research initiatives, and global academic networks. By bringing together a community committed to exploring how intelligence operates in space, SPINCON is not only responding to current technological transformations but actively shaping the future of how we design, understand, and inhabit the environments around us.
